76 THE COASTAL BEND MAGAZINE TheCoastalBend.com Disc Golf Now More Popular than Ever in the Coastal Bend Fans of the late 90’s hit sitcom, Seinfeld, might remember the infamous episode in which George Costanza neglected Jerry’s urgent need for party invitations, instead choosing to play a round of “Frisbee Golf” in Central Park. A game that served as a punchline decades ago has evolved into a rather serious, and seriously fun, endeavor now known as Disc Golf. For most Corpus Christians, the most visible Disc Golf being played in town takes place at Lamar Park, along the south- ernmost end of Santa Fe Street, which runs parallel to Ocean Drive. In nice conditions, especially on weekends, one four- some after another can be seen “teeing off” and “putting” us- ing highly-specialized, competition-certified discs—not Fris- bees, which is actually a brand name going back to the 1950’s. Before pickleball emerged as the smaller-scale, more play- er-friendly version of tennis, Disc Golf had become the same for traditional golf, and hundreds of players in the Coastal Bend are participating on a regular basis. Clubs have been formed in Facebook groups, and those who have become more serious at the game, as traditional golfers often do, are benefiting from coaching and mentor- ing from more experienced players. One of the most experienced in the Coastal Bend is Ludwig Kramarz, who was so enthusiastic about Disc Golf that he opened Parked-It Disc Golf Emporium on Airline Road in Corpus Christi, selling everything for the game from specialized discs, backpacks and pull-carts, to complete Disc Golf course equipment, includ- ing baskets and markers. The Coastal Bend now has seven public and free Disc Golf courses.
